Heshima has been a place of hope for poverty-stricken families with disabled children. These families not only deal with the pressures of extreme poverty (mud floors, tin roofs, no running water, no indoor toilets) but also deal with the pressures of physical and mental disabilities. Heshima provides the therapy and special education that they need. Nutrition is also a big part of our program because our families struggle with malnutrition, which can cause brain damage. Heshima provides 2 meals daily for 80 people; 40 children with disabilities and their mothers. Currently, our kitchen is 15 feet x 25 feet and consists of one stove top, one sink and storage space. Our program is growing, so we need more equipment for our kitchen to be able to provide the food that is needed. All of these families come from extreme poverty and many of our kids are malnourished when they first come to Heshima. They now will have a chance to have well-prepared food in a kitchen capable of providing everyone the nutrition they need.
